Spring Chicken Race 4
Posted by: Chris | Catagory: Race Review | 04 03 2009Getting interesting now with a discard to kick in if we get racing on Sunday. Showing as breezy at moment but keep praying - it has worked before!
No decision on racing will be made until around 10 on Sunday Morning ( so no need to ring me) as we want to make every effort to go sailing & get our discard race in. SO be ready for breezy conditions.
In the case there is no racing, we will meet in the National Y.C. at 12.30 to set up the prizegiving etc. As I said last Sunday, I will not be going home with the prizes so you have to be there. Also there will be draws for race winner for the races lost - with DL VOLVO Helly Hansen jackets to be won. Many thanks to the DL VOLVO Organisers for organising the jackets and arranging a subsidised price for us!
Hope everybody enjoyed last Sunday - I don’t think the gate worked too well with a short run to it but we will keep trying. Didn’t hear or see any mishaps, except one which is settled, so no slagging this week!
At this stage, I would like to thank Viking Marine for sponsoring another enjoyable but short series, to the National Y.C. & staff for hosting us and looking after us so well - this week the food is complimentary - and to our weekly sponsors McWilliam One Sails and O’Brien Press. All their contributions added greatly to our enjoyment of the event. Also many thanks to Allianz Insurance for the jacket that was used in the draw last week. In these difficult times I would urge you all to support all our sponsors in the coming sailing season.
I would also like to thank all my own crew on Mac Lir who do such a great job for us all - and also bake very well for those on board! To Kevin Leonard for the results, the Marina Office & staff for their help and finally to you, the competitors.
As I said above, there are nice prizes to be presented to race winners & the overall winners but you have to be there to collect, otherwise it goes down the line to who is there on the day & no boat gets two of anything!
Make arrangements to stay around for a few pints in the National with your crew & other Chickens. See you sunday!

Spring Chicken Race 3
Posted by: Chris | Catagory: Race Review | 21 02 2009Well, we got going last week & I hope everybody enjoyed it. Hopefully we get racing on Sunday with a nice breeze & sunshine! (pray again as it worked last week).
We had interesting incidents viewed from Mac Lir last Sunday, like kite hoists first time around and some of the finishes. Wow,they were spectacular and not to be outdone we had another boat Jump in to try & grab attention! If we’d had music it might have been "Gone Fishin’" & "Twist & Shout". Pity Declan wasn’t there with his camera!
Anyway , make sure you come back to National on Sunday - some boats missed good prizes not being there. Many thanks to Viking Marine for all the tickets which were gobbled up & to McWilliam One Sails for the bags.
Spring Chicken Race 2
Posted by: Chris | Catagory: Race Review | 09 02 2009Race 2 Snowed Out! Thanks to Caroline Leonard for the photos!
Spring Chicken Race 1
Posted by: Chris | Catagory: Race Review | 01 02 2009A strong easterly wind gusting up to 25 knots accompanied by a heavy swell lead to the cancellation of the first race in the series. Hopefully racing will get under way next week!
Turkey Shoot - Race 7
Posted by: Chris | Catagory: Race Review | 29 12 2008For the final race of this years Turkey Shoot the committee set an Olympic course. Given the feastive nature of the race a number of boats dressed up for the occassion (photos to follow!) Going into the race there were at least 10 boats bunched close together in the overall rankings but after the race (which was won by Viking Marine Harmony) the overall series winner was declared to be Asterix. Prizes were presented in the Irish to the winners by Commodore Tim Costello after racing. As always Dublin Bay would like to thank Fintan Cairns and all the team for putting together such great racing early every Sunday morning! The top 3 placings were as follows:
Turkey Shoot - Race 6
Posted by: Chris | Catagory: Race Review | 10 12 2008Nice morning last Sunday, probably a bit light but a race for the discard to kick in. Hopefully we get our last race in next Sunday with sunshine & a bit of breeze - varying forecasts at moment. It would be a nice way to run into Christmas.
Regarding last Sunday, a few facts in relation to the Turkey Shoot. We start the bigger boats last - not an ideal thing to do, we can only lay shortish legs in lighter airs which does not help seperation and we do not like protests. Boats with rights of way should not get too uppity about it and likewise others should not try pushing their luck on others that have rights. It is the Turkey Shoot, not a World Championship! In other words, cop on.
Next Sunday’s race will be a Seasonal Fancy Dress Race & also after in Wet Bar, Seasonal Fancy Dress again. Prizes for best afloat & in Wet Bar. We hopefully have final race on Sunday with prizegiving & craic after. Hope all crews are organised , drivers, permission, etc. to attend. Still have copy of Permission Slips if you need any more.
At this stage of of our last race for this year’s Viking Marine Turkey Shoot, I would sincerely like to thank our main sponsors, Viking Marine, the Royal Irish Y.C. for hosting this year’s event and our weekly sponsors Hardys Wines, McWilliams Sails and O’Brien Press. All their contributions have had a tremendous input to the success of this year’s event. My thanks also to our R.O. Henry Leonard & the Committee Boat Crew who have enjoyed the event & your ackowledgements at the finish. Also to Kevin Leonard for preparing results each week, to the staff of the Irish for putting up with us, to the staff & management of the Marina for all their help, to Declan Ward for photos and last but not least, our incorrigible compere, Brian Mathews!
Good luck to you all on Sunday, see you then!

P.S. In the event of no racing, festivities will commence in the Wet Bar at 12.45
PPS.Viking Marine Spring Chicken Series 2009 starts Sunday 1st February, hosted by the National Y.C.
Turkey Shoot - Race 5
Posted by: Chris | Catagory: Race Review | 02 12 2008Sunday 30th November was a beautiful day for sailing with a 12 knot NNW breeze. As the sun rose higher over Killiney Hill the hardy Turkey sailors slowly thawed out and started to ruffle their feathers. A wonderful array of colourful spinnakers were seen from the shores of Dublin Bay in mid winter. Sixty eight boats with more than 400 hundred sailors were set an challenging course to the Muglins. It incorporated a weather mark, a reach to the yellow outflow, a gybe mark in Scotsman Bay, the Muglins to port and a beat to the finish in Scotsman Bay.
After U got line honours followed closely by Indecision and White Mischief.
The standard of waves at the finish has hugely improved and is greatly appreciated by the Race Committee on Mac Lir.
Turkey Shoot - Race 4
Posted by: Chris | Catagory: Race Review | 25 11 2008Race 4 was canceled due to strong winds.
Turkey Shoot - Race 3
Posted by: Chris | Catagory: Race Review | 23 11 2008Race 3 was sailed in light and tricky winds with a great turnout of 66 boats. The original course to the Muglins was shortened to an around the cans affair as what wind there was at the start dropped off. In order to get a good race in the committee signaled a number of course changes during the race which certainly kept the leading boats on their toes! For all competitors a close listening watch on Channel 74 is certainly advised! Handicaps have been adjusted once more for next week’s race.
Turkey Shoot - Race 2
Posted by: Chris | Catagory: Race Review | 14 11 2008Race 2 was abandoned due to strong winds.
